Chinese Tourist Arrivals in Bali Down 4.48 Pct Last Year

DENPASAR, KOMPAS.com - The number of Chinese tourists visiting Bali last year fell 4.48 percent to 196,925 from 206,151 a year earlier, data show.  Despite the drop, China ranked third among the top ten sources of foreign tourist arrivals in Bali after Australia and Japan, Chief of the Bali Provincial Statistics Office I Gede Suarsa said here on Wednesday.
The Chinese tourists represented 7.64 percent of the overall foreign tourist arrivals in Bali last year which reached 2.57 million, up 8.01 percent from the year before, he said. Gede Suarsa expressed hope the improving Chinese economy would increase the number of Chinese tourists visiting the resort island in the years to come.
He said the number of tourists from six of the top ten sources of Bali’s foreign tourist arrivals grew significantly last year, while that of the other four countries fell.
Tourist arrivals from Australia rose 43.67 percent to 641,588 from 446,570, Malaysia 16.03 percent to 156,858 from 135,190, Taiwan 1.50 percent to 122,256 from 120,445, Singapore 73.96 percent to 97,402 from 56,992, Britain 2.91 percent to 96,412 from 93,688 and Germany 12.77 percent to 84,406 from 74,849.
The number of tourist arrivals from Japan meanwhile fell 26.61 percent from 333,905 in 2009 to 245,040 in 2010, China 4.48 percent from 206,151 to 196,925, South Korea 0.13 percent from 124,889 to 124,729 and France 8.31 percent from 113,453 to 104,029. Bali has set itself the target of luring 2.6 million to 2.8 million foreign tourists this year.
